Jason's PIT Notes NEWS

NASCAR Fans are the BEST and WORST

It's been a while since I have fired up the old blog machine but since I just recently graduated from the Illinois Media School and have begun pounding the pavement for a job, it has come to my attention that I will probably be forced to blog at some point for the radio station I find myself working for.

Also, because I consider myself a straight shooter, I can tell you right now that chances are I will more than likely piss off somebody, make you laugh your ass off, or really make you dig deep and think about what Im saying here.

Now look, I am not trying to change your opinion on the "Stage Racing" or "Monster Girls" but I do want you realize that the next time you hit "POST" or "TWEET" that you are doing a lot more than voicing your opinion for something you claim to love.

Social Media is the biggest tool in America right now, whether it be Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, you name it. Believe it or not, what you post has a reaction on the way other people perceive things. That was pretty much a long disclaimer to what my actual story is but your still with me, so thats good.

NASCAR fans have always been a tight knit and loyal. Chances are, if you have ever been to a race, you have more than likely wonder up to a total strangers tailgate or campground and found yourself in conversation while sucking down a Coors Light (Official Beer of NASCAR) or a Coca-Cola (Official Soft Drink of NASCAR). Some talk racing while others talk life but you more than likely talked about how awesome it was to be at the race track in person.

I still remember my first race... 1998 Coca-Cola 300 NASCAR Busch Series race that Dale Earnhardt Jr. won, claiming his first checkered flag. Me and my dad sat in row three coming off of turn four and couldn't even see the cars down the backstretch but that didn't matter, cause it was so awesome being there in person and smelling the fumes, seeing the cars, being around a live NASCAR crowd for the first time was what made me a fan for life.

Yes, I get it, NASCAR has made a overhaul on a lot of things over the last twenty years but I still get giddy every raceday I get to experience in person and I have experienced a lot. From the stands, the infield, and even working in the pits, because I love racing and social media didn't tell me I shouldn't love racing when I fell in love.

What? How does social media effect what you like and what you don't? Believe me, it's 2017 and it does in so many ways. Social Media has become the outlet for everything online and NASCAR capitalized on this boom in a big way with jeffgluck.com's very own, Jeff Gluck hosting "Tweet Ups" for fans to interact with each other and meet some cool people such as drivers, owners, and spotters. Drivers voicing their displeasure with calls in 180 characters or less and even attracting people to figure out why #FOHQT500 was trendy. That's the good stuff when it come to social media and how fans can interact.

Shall we get the bad now? This is a screen shot I took of the comments under a post made by the NASCAR fan page which I will go ahead and add isn't ran by Brian France for all of you who think it is...

So much negativity on here but did you notice that middle comment?

"NASCAR fans are CRUEL and BULLIES" but thats not the NASCAR fan I mentioned earlier? Those aren't the ones that showed me what to look out for my first race? Nope, those are the ones who became self entitled because they had their voices heard on a rule change to make double-file restarts the norm in back in 2009. Soon after that, every change that NASCAR has made (most for a better product) has been scrutinized because Brian France doesn't call up Jethro and ask for his input. Is the GM of your favorite team gonna call and ask if it's cool to trade your favorite player? I don't think so!

NASCAR is trying to bring in new fans and the "I've been a fan since Yarborough and Allison" guys need to do us a favor and shout the hell up. If I was a brand new fan, I would literally not watch based on what I see on social media because all I see is a bunch of negative Nancys.

So the next time you want to take to the NASCAR social media, just remember that Monster Energy bought into this when nobody else would so it would be who of you to give them a bit of support. Stage racing will be awesome once NASCAR gets a full season under their belts, and you guys are digging deep to be mad at the five minute clock. Also, while I may not be effected by your negative opinion, there is a new fan who will more than likely be turned away cause your a keyboard warrior!

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 400 Recap (The Chase Round 1)

Martin Truex Jr. punched his ticket to the "Round of 12" on Sunday at Chicagoland Speedway, by holding off Joey Logano on a "Green, White, Checkered" finish. The race might of been called the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 400 but Truex had to find his inner Shredder to race through the field after falling a lap down early.

NEXT: Coming into Chicagoland Speedway, many drivers had different philosophies coming into the weekend. For Truex and Crew Chief, Cole Pearn, the philosophy was go fast and that what they did majority of the race even after having a tire go down and had to come to pit road for a unscheduled pit stop. Although his number 78 Furniture Row Racing Toyota failed post race qualifying, it was only a P2 infraction and Truex is still gonna be credited with the win and can breathe easy the next two races.

Still CHASEing a Win: It looked like today was gonna be the day that Hendrick Motorsports flexed their muscle and got into Victory lane for the first time since spring. Jimmie Johnson lead a race high 118 laps before a pit road speeding penalty which handed the lead over to rookie driver, Chase Elliott. As the laps wind down, Elliott seemed to be in control with Truex trying to catch him and then a yellow flag came out for Michael McDowell with just three laps to go. He led the field down pit road and came off second but had to restart in the fifth position on the inside line behind guys who stayed out. When the green flag through, Elliott did all he could but couldn't get the momentum that guys restarting on the high side got and finished 3rd behind fellow Chase drivers, Truex and Joey Logano.

SPOILER ALERT: We knew once the Chase started, teams outside the top 16 in points were gonna be taking risk and it almost paid off. When Chase Elliott and the leaders came to pit road. Rookie driver, Ryan Blaney and Kasey Kahne opted to stay on the track and see if they could hold off the leaders along with Chase driver, Carl Edwards. The gambled paid off for Blaney and Kahne who finished 4th and 7th but backfired for Edwards who got shuffled back and finished 15th.

Chase Standings: Here's how the Chase field looks heading into New Hampshire!

Cars of Martin Truex and Jimmie Johnson failed post race inspection and will be issued penalties for a P2 violation. We won't know until Tuesday what the punishment will be but it should result in a loss of 10 points for each. Although Truex will keep the victory granting him a spot in the "Round of 12" the penalty for Johnson will knock him out of the top 12 in points and put the pressure on him the next two weeks.

My Take: It was definitely a great weekend for Toyota for they had drivers that won all three events and Martin Truex did have the fastest car all day and fought his way back on the lead lap. It will be interesting to see how favorites like Johnson, Harvick, and Stewart race this upcoming weekend. Will they be conservative or will they let it all hang out in a effort to avoid a must win situation at Dover.

Federated Auto Parts 400 Recap

The final checker flag of NASCARs regular season flew at Richmond International Raceway Saturday Night and it belongs to hometown favorite, Denny Hamlin. Hamlin, who started on the pole, led 189 laps on Saturday night en route to his third win of the season but it was guys battling for the final spots of The Chase who stole the show.

Ohh, You Almost Had It: Kasey Kahne did everything he could in what essentially was a win to get in race for him. A late caution and the decision not to pit to get four tires while running in the Top 5 could be having the driver of the Farmers Insurance Chevrolet second guessing himself the rest of the year.

No Retirement Gift For You: Much like Kahne, Newman found himself outside the Top 16 in points and after his car failed post race inspection last weekend, he was docked a extra 15 points. He drove his Richard Childress Racing Chevy through the field using the bumper a few times. That was until he used it on Tony Stewart and Tony didn't take to kindly to that driving across the bumper of Newman's car and causing a multi-car crash that brought out the red flag. Newman was very out spoken of Stewart "You've got somebody old like that retired (should be retired) the way he drives. It's just ridiculous." Said Newman.

Sigh of Relief: It's been a long five weeks for rookie, Chris Buescher. After outsmarting the field en route to a victory at Pocono in a race that was called short due to weather. The team had to first get into the Top 30 in points to be Chase eligible and then had to stay there. That's exactly what he did Saturday night finishing 24th on Saturday night when David Ragan, the driver he was racing for 30th in points finished 34th.

The Chase Field is Set: Heres how The Chase field will look heading into Chicagoland Speedway this week. Get those brackets in!

My Thoughts: The race was what it was. There really wasn't anytime I was left wondering if a guy would race into the Top 16. With that being said, I'm looking forward to a excellent Chase this year. I will have my Chase preview  and predictions up this Thursday night after attending The Chase Media Day in Chicago!

Bojangles Southern 500 Review

Well well well, after a grueling five-hundred miles at NASCAR's original super speedway, Martin Truex Jr. is back in victory lane and is looking like he could be a favorite heading into The Chase in two weeks. Truex led the final 15 circuits on Sunday evening and took advantage of Kevin Harvicks pit crew mistakes to win one of NASCAR's crown-jewels and a throwback, the Bojangles Southern 500.

A Tail of Two Races: If five-hundred miles weren't enough at the track nicknamed "Too Tough To Tame" the sun-set and track changes made this race hard to pick. Drivers who were fast during the twilight stages of the race weren't fast late in the race. With tire wear the way it was, teams had to be fast on track and on pit road and thats exactly what determined this finish.

Happy Ain't Happy: You would think after a second place run, Kevin Harvick would be excited about his chances heading into The Chase in a few weeks. That wasn't the case last night after several miscues on pit road. A faulty air gun cost Harvick and the Busch Beer team a chance at the win on lap 281. Afterwards, the 2014 Sprint Cup Series Champion called his crew out "Im over being a cheerleader. Those guys get paid a lot of money to perform on pit road, and cheerleading hasn't really been working. You've got to get after it on pit road and do your job."

Tony Smokes Scott: For many NASCAR fans, the chance to troll point blame at Tony Stewart is gladly accepted and Stewart sent the invite on Lap 204 when he and Brian Scott had a incident that ended Scotts day. Scott, who was already a few laps down, thought it was intentional. While Stewarts day would come to a end on Lap 317, when asked about the incident, he smirked up to TV reporters and said "He wrecked" has he walked off the camera. NASCAR did talk to Tony Stewart and no fine or disciplinary action is imminent.

Right in The Feels: Feel good stories have always been a big part of NASCAR and it only seems fitting another feel good story would happen at Darlington, during throwback weekend. Josh Wise took to twitter last week answering questions from fans and said his team would rather have extra tires than a throwback paint scheme. A #HASHTAG here and a #HASHTAG there and Josh Wise ended up with not just a new/old paint scheme, he and his team got a new sponsor. Incredible-Bank, a internet only bank, sponsored the number 30 TMG Chevy this past weekend and has signed on to sponsor the team at Chicagoland Speedway in two weeks.

Possible Penalty Before RIR?: At the conclusion of Sunday nights race, Ryan Newman was only 7 points behind Jamie McMurray and the final Chase spot. After the race though, Ryan Newmans 31 RCR Chevrolet failed post race inspection. Possible fines and point penalties will be announced Tuesday and if any is levied to the 31 team, Saturday nights race will be a MUST WIN if he wants to advance into The Chase.

My Take: The race was a huge boost to Truex and the Furniture Row Racing bunch and the guy who has had so much bad luck was finally able to take advantage of someone else's mistakes. Heading into this weekend, drivers outside the Top 16 in points better bring their best bullet and win this race cause right now, it looks bleak for drivers like Kahne, Blaney, and Bayne. Drivers are gonna have to tackle the competition just like Cole Custer did in Sundays Truck race!

Pure Michigan 400 Recap

Pure Michigan 400 Recap

It has been way too long for not only myself updating this blog but also for Kyle Larson getting into to Victory Lane. The twenty-four year old out of Elk Grove, California held off a late charge from rookie driver Chase Elliott to score his first Sprint Cup Series win in his ninety-ninth career series start.

He's in The Chase: Kyle Larson has just stamped his ticket to The Chase for the Sprint Cup that begins in three weeks at Chicagoland Speedway and he couldn't of done it in more dramatic fashion. Knowing he was going to have to win to get in, he charged from his twelfth place starting spot and led a race high forty-one laps en-route to his victory.

First of his kind: Kyle Larson won Sunday's NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Michigan International Speedway to become the first graduate of the NASCAR Drive for Diversity and the NASCAR Next programs to win at the sanctioning body's top level. Larson,of Japanese-American heritage, has earned the nickname "Young Money" by friends in the Sprint Car ranks and even dedicated this win to his late friend, Bryan Clauson, who lost his life three weeks ago.

Bridesmaid Again for Chase: It's been ten races since Hendrick Motorsports rookie driver, Chase Elliott finished in the top five and it was actually the June race at Michigan International Speedway. Chase Elliott looked to have the race in hand with a two second lead until a late debris caution came out. On the ensuing restart, Elliott spun his tires and fell back to third. He was able to drive back up to second but too little too late.

Survival for Buescher: It was a long day for the driver of the Front Row Motorsports entry, Chris Buescher. Engine trouble struck the team on only lap number two and he fell several laps down before finishing thirty-fifth. He now clings on to thirtieth position in the Sprint Cup Series by only seven points over David Ragan. A position he needs to finish in to clinch a spot in The Chase. With two races left till NASCARs playoffs begin, it will be interesting to see how they race mid-pack.

TheNASCARTER's Take: We talked about on The Main Event on sportstownchicago.com that with NASCAR electing to use next years aero-package the skilled drivers would rise to the top. With Larson winning, Elliott finishing second, and rookie, Ryan Blaney, finishing fourth. The future looks very bright in NASCAR!

Up Next: NASCAR returns to their roots this weekend when they go throwback at the  Darlington Raceway for the Southern 500 this Sunday night on NBC.
